Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Surgical removal of the Gallbladder is known as Cholecystectomy. It can be performed by open (Large cut) Surgery as well as Laparoscopic method. At present, Laparoscopic method is the gold standard procedure worldwide. Open surgery is rare now a days and is performed only in selected patients.
How is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy performed?
Lap Cholecystectomy is performed using three to four small incisions of size 5mm and 10mm through which instruments are introduced and surgery performed.
What are the diseases for which Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is performed?
The most common cause for this surgery is Gallbladder stones. Other less common indications are Gallbladder polyp (mass), Adenomyomatosis, Severe infection of gallbladder (Acute cholecystitis) etc.
What are the tests required before going for a Cholecystectomy?
Ultrasonography of the abdomen is the best test to diagnose gallbladders stones. All the routine pre-surgical blood tests, Imaging and checkups including PAC is required before going for this Surgery. Sometimes special investigations like CT scan, MRCP etc. may also be required.
I have been diagnosed as Gallbladder stones but I don't have any complains, Shall I get operated?
Although not an Emergency, you shall get the cholecystectomy performed as gallbladder stones may produce complications. One should not wait for the complications to occur and then decide for Surgery.
What are the complications associated with this Surgery?
Bleeding, Hematoma, bile duct injury causing bile leak, conversion to open surgery, injury to other organs, retained stones in CBD, Surgical site infection are some of the complications that can occur with this Surgery. The overall complication rate in this surgery is very low.
How are the complications managed?
Complications may be treated conservatively but sometime may need immediate or delayed re-operation also.
When do we start walking / resume work after Surgery?
Walking is started on the day of surgery. Personal household activities can be started the next day. Lifting heavy weight, driving and normal duties can be resumed once the patient is completely pain free. However you must follow the discharge advice given by your Surgeon.
When do we start eating after surgery?
Patient is kept nil orally for 6 hours prior to Surgery. Oral feeding is resumed 4-6 hrs. after Surgery. In general no food restrictions are there if one does not have any co-morbidities.
Can I have normal lifestyle after the Surgery?
Yes. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy does not affect your normal lifestyle and no special precautions or restriction exist after Surgery.
When are the stitches removed?
Normally stitches are remove after about 7-10 days of Surgery. If internal (subcuticular) stitches have been given, you will not need removal. Please follow the advice given by your Surgeon for the same.
I am a sportsperson and also do Gym workout daily. Can I do it after Surgery?
Yes. You can completely resume your sports and Gym workout after the Surgery.
